Egypt has a hook that few destinations match for younger travellers. Herodotus called Egypt a gift of the Nile, and the phrase survived because it is close to literally true. Egypt is a narrow green ribbon a few kilometres wide in places, laid across a desert the size of a continent, and almost everyone in the country still lives beside the water. Understanding the river explains most of what you will see on the ground: why the temples stand where they stand, why the boats go the way they go, and why a country this dry ever grew this rich. What the Nile actually is The Nile runs about 6,650 km (roughly 4,130 miles) across northeast Africa. It is one of the longest rivers on earth; whether it is the longest depends on how you measure the Amazon, and the honest answer is that hydrologists still argue about it. What is not in dispute is its direction. The Nile flows from south to north and empties into the Mediterranean through a wide delta, which catches out almost every visitor who has grown up with maps where north means up and rivers seem to run down the page. That single fact reorganizes the whole map of Egypt. Upper Egypt is in the south, at Luxor and Aswan, because it sits upstream. Lower Egypt is in the north, around Cairo and the delta, because it sits downstream. Guides say "we are sailing up to Aswan" and mean south. The Blue Nile falls out of the Ethiopian highlands from Lake Tana, and it is the one that used to do the dramatic work: most of the water and almost all of the silt arrived with the Ethiopian rains. The two join at Khartoum, the Sudanese capital, and from there the combined river makes its long run north through the desert to Egypt and the sea. For centuries the true source was one of the great unsolved geographical questions, and it consumed a generation of nineteenth-century explorers. The flood that built a civilization Every summer, the Ethiopian rains pushed the river over its banks and across the fields of Egypt. When the water pulled back it left a layer of black, nutrient-heavy silt, and that silt renewed the soil for free, every year, for thousands of years. No one had to lift a tool to make it happen. The surplus is the whole story. Grain that reliable pays for scribes, priests, quarry gangs and standing armies, and out of that surplus came the cities, the temples and the pyramids at Giza. The flood also produced the calendar, the survey system that reset field boundaries after the water withdrew, and a state confident enough to plan projects that took decades. Hapi, the god of the inundation, was shown as a heavy-bodied figure with river plants on his head, and he was one of the few gods depicted as prosperous rather than powerful, which tells you what Egyptians thought abundance looked like. What changed when the High Dam closed The river you sail today is not the river the pharaohs used, and the reason is a single structure south of Aswan. Two dams are often confused. The older Aswan Low Dam dates from 1902 and was raised twice. The one that changed everything is the Aswan High Dam, completed in the early 1970s, which created Lake Nasser and ended the annual flood permanently. What Egypt gained Full control of the water. No more destructive floods in a high year, no more catastrophic drought in a low one. Large-scale hydroelectricity. And perennial irrigation, which means more than one harvest a year on the same field instead of a single crop timed around the inundation. For a country whose population was climbing fast, these were not small gains. What it cost The silt now settles in the reservoir instead of on the fields. Egyptian agriculture has depended on chemical fertilizer ever since, and the delta, no longer being topped up with sediment, is eroding into the sea rather than rebuilding itself. The rising water also drowned an entire stretch of the valley, displacing tens of thousands of Nubians from their villages in Egypt and tens of thousands more upstream in Sudan. Nubian culture in Aswan and its islands is not a folkloric add-on to a cruise; it is what is left of a homeland that went under. The temples that were moved The most important monuments in the flooded zone were cut into numbered blocks and rebuilt on higher ground, Abu Simbel most famously, in an international rescue campaign that ran for years. Twice a year, at first light, a beam of sun enters the doorway of the great temple of Ramesses II at Abu Simbel, travels roughly 60 metres through the hypostyle hall and the vestibule, and lands on the figures carved into the back wall of the sanctuary. It holds for about 18 to 20 minutes. Then it slides off the stone and that chamber goes back to darkness until the next of the two dates. That is the Sun Festival, and it is the reason people set an alarm for 3:00 in the morning. The next two occurrences are 22 October 2026 and 22 February 2027. The dates and the timing The alignment falls on 22 February and 22 October every year. The two mornings are not evenly spaced: four months separate October from February, and eight months separate February from October. Those are not equinoxes and they are nowhere near them. The equinox alignments people talk about at other Egyptian sites are a separate phenomenon; Abu Simbel is a custom calculation aimed at two particular mornings. Sunrise at Abu Simbel drifts by a few minutes from one year to the next, and the October date sits inside Egypt's daylight saving period, which runs until the last Thursday of the month, so the hour you read on a clock in October is later than the February one even though the sun is doing exactly the same thing. Treat the figures as a guide and have the gate opening time confirmed locally the evening before. Anyone quoting you a precise arrival time months ahead is guessing. The birth and coronation labels deserve the same care. They are the traditional explanation, repeated in almost every guidebook, and they may well be right, but no surviving ancient text ties either date to either event, and sources disagree about which date belongs to which. It is a good story rather than a documented fact. What happens inside the temple Ramesses II had the great temple cut into the rock of a sandstone hill in the thirteenth century BC. The facade is four seated colossi of the pharaoh, twenty metres tall, facing the water. Almost every photograph stops there, but the facade is not where the engineering is. The achievement is the axis behind it, which runs about 60 metres into the hillside and ends in a small chamber: the sanctuary. Four seated statues are carved into the sanctuary's back wall. Left to right they are Ptah, the god of Memphis, tied to the underworld; Amun-Ra, king of the gods; Ramesses II himself in divine form; and Ra-Horakhty, the solar god. The iconography stops being confusing once you know what to look for, so a few minutes on recognizing Egyptian gods before you travel pays off in the two minutes you get in front of them. The statue that stays dark On the two festival mornings the beam reaches three of those four figures. Ra-Horakhty, Amun-Ra and the deified Ramesses are lit. Ptah is not. He stays in shadow. Ptah's associations are with the underworld and with darkness, which is why the placement is generally read as deliberate rather than accidental. Thirty-three centuries later that is still the detail that stops visitors. Orienting a building to the sun is difficult. Orienting it so that one specific figure in a row of four is excluded, on two chosen mornings and no others, is a different order of problem. Why the alignment survived being moved The most improbable thing about the Sun Festival is not that it was designed. It is that it still works, because the temple you walk into today is not standing where it was built. The rescue operation In the 1960s the Aswan High Dam was going to create Lake Nasser and put Abu Simbel underneath it. Between 1964 and 1968 UNESCO coordinated an international operation to prevent that. Both temples were cut into more than a thousand large numbered blocks and rebuilt 65 metres higher and roughly 200 metres further inland, inside concrete domes shaped to imitate the original hill. Moving the stone was the manageable part. Setting it back down at an orientation exact enough that the solar alignment still functioned was not, and it still functions. Every sunrise crowd standing at that doorway today is there because of that piece of work. You will also read that the move pushed the dates by a day, from 21 February and 21 October to the 22nd of each. It is repeated almost everywhere, and it is disputed: some Egyptologists argue the original dates were never the 21st, and that a shift of a couple of hundred metres cannot move a solar date by a full day. Since you will meet both versions in print, plan around the dates the site works to now, which are 22 February and 22 October. The temple next door Beside the great temple stands a smaller one that Ramesses dedicated to Nefertari, his principal wife, and to the goddess Hathor. Its facade is one of the very rare cases in Egyptian art where the queen appears at the same scale as the pharaoh. Go into both. The problem is heat, an itinerary designed for adults, and a first morning that opens with the biggest sight of the trip while everyone is still wrecked from the journey. Why children take to Egypt Egypt hands a child something unusual: a story larger than the object, attached to an object that is still enormous. No, Egypt is not an expensive country to travel in, and the reason is worth understanding before you plan anything. Once you have landed, the everyday cost of being there is among the lowest you will find anywhere: a plate of food, a taxi across Cairo, a scarf from a market stall. What weighs on the total is the organized part of the trip, above all the standard of boat you choose on the Nile. Those are decisions rather than fixed prices, which is why the same route, the same days and the same monuments can add up to a modest trip or a genuinely costly one. Where the money actually sits It helps to stop thinking about one number and start thinking about three layers, because they behave very differently. The first is the international flight, which you book yourself, direct with the airline.
