How Many Days Do You Need in Egypt

Seven days on the ground covers Cairo and a Nile cruise properly. Eight to ten adds Abu
Simbel and enough slack that one delay does not cost you a site. Under five, the honest answer is to
do one thing well rather than compress the classic route into something you will not enjoy.

The useful way to think about this is not how many nights you are buying. It is how many usable
days you will actually have, and for a traveler coming from the United States those are two
different numbers.

Start by subtracting the days you will not get

The flight from the US is long, most routings arrive in Cairo in the evening or overnight, and
the time difference runs against you. What that means in practice:

• Your arrival day is not a touring day. Plan on landing, clearing immigration,
  getting to the hotel and sleeping. Anyone who tells you to see the pyramids that afternoon is
  selling nights rather than planning a trip.
• Your departure day is usually half a day at most, and often none, depending on
  the flight.
• The first full day runs on adjusted sleep. It works fine for Giza, which is a
  morning, and works badly for a long driving day.

So a trip sold as eight days often means six usable ones. Count that way from the start and the
rest of this page makes sense.

What each length actually gives you

Under five days

Enough for one base, done properly. Cairo alone works well: Giza, Saqqara, the Egyptian Museum or
the Grand Egyptian Museum, and the old city. So does Luxor alone, which has more standing monuments
than anywhere else in the country. What does not work is trying to add the Nile valley to Cairo in
this window. You will spend the trip in transit.

Around seven days

The shortest length that covers the classic route without it feeling like a forced march. Cairo
for the pyramids and the museum, then south for the Nile between Luxor and Aswan. A cruise is the
efficient way to do the river portion because the temples come to you and you unpack once.

This is the length most first-time visitors should be looking at, and it maps onto our

Eight to ten days

The sweet spot, and the length we would pick for ourselves. The extra days buy two specific
things: Abu Simbel, which is the single site most people regret skipping, and
slack. Egypt is a country where a road closes, a flight moves, or a tomb shuts for conservation on
the morning you were going to see it. With eight to ten days that is an adjustment. With six it is a
lost site.

Twelve days or more

Long enough to add a genuinely different kind of place rather than more temples. Usually that
means Red Sea time at the end, which is also where the cultural fatigue of a long monument trip gets
absorbed, or Alexandria, or the western desert oases. Twelve days of nothing but pharaonic sites is
more than most people want, and we will say so.

Distances, which are the real constraint

Egypt is bigger than it looks on an itinerary. Cairo to Luxor is a long way, and the practical
options are a domestic flight or an overnight train rather than a drive. Luxor to Aswan is the
stretch the cruises cover. Abu Simbel is far south of Aswan again, by road convoy or a short
flight.

Domestic Egyptian flights are included where an itinerary needs them. Your international flight
is yours to arrange, which leaves you free to choose your routing, and it is also why we plan around
your arrival and departure times rather than a fixed departure date.

The three mistakes we see most

• Booking a Luxor day trip from a Red Sea resort. It is a very long day in a
  vehicle for a few hours at the sites, and it is the single most common source of disappointment on
  an Egypt trip.
• Adding Abu Simbel to a schedule that cannot hold it. Either give it the time it
  needs or leave it for the next trip. Squeezed in, it becomes the worst day rather than the best.
• Treating the arrival day as a touring day. Covered above, and worth repeating
  because it is the one that quietly ruins the first two days.

Common questions

Is one week enough for Egypt

For Cairo plus a Nile cruise, yes, provided you count usable days rather than nights. It is the
most common length for a first trip and it works.

How many days do I need for Cairo alone

Two full days covers Giza, Saqqara and a museum without rushing. A third lets you slow down and
add the old city properly.

Do I need a Nile cruise or can I do it overland

Both work. The cruise means unpacking once and having the temples arrive at you. Overland gives
more control over timing and more nights in a fixed hotel. We run

Is it worth going for only three or four days

Yes, if you pick one base and accept that. A short, well-chosen trip is far better than a
compressed version of a long one.

When in the year does the length matter most

In summer, because the heat forces a different daily rhythm and you lose the middle of the day.
The same itinerary needs more slack then. That is covered on
